Background
Given the success of citizen assemblies, other large organizations are also exploring how they can have their community discuss complex issues. Schools are the ideal group for this. As part of the pilot for school assemblies, organized by BureauBurgerberaad, I organised the school deliberation at CURIO in Breda together with my colleague Ernst Abbing. The question posed during the school assembly in Breda was, “How can we work together to build a CURIO where you really matter?”
My role in the project
As the internal project leader, I was responsible for liaising with the school, co-organized the selection of participants, advised on the process, and served as the alternate discussion facilitator and moderator during the five days of the school council.

Outcome
The school council resulted in a series of recommendations that the administration used to give their students and staff a more meaningful experience during their time at CURIO. The evaluation revealed many learning experiences gained through the process and remarkable personal stories from participants.
